Magnetic effect on CO2 solubility in seawater: A possible link between geomagnetic field variations and climate

چکیده
[1] Correlations between geomagnetic-field and climate parameters have been suggested repeatedly, but possible links are controversially discussed. Here we test if weak (Earth-strength) magnetic fields can affect climatically relevant properties of seawater. We found the solubility of air in seawater to be by 15% lower under reduced magneticfield (20 mT) compared to normal field conditions (50 mT). The magnetic-field effect on CO2 solubility is twice as large, from which we surmise that geomagnetic field variations modulate the carbon exchange between atmosphere and ocean. A 1% reduction in magnetic dipole moment may release up to ten times more CO2 from the surface ocean than is emitted by subaerial volcanism. This figure is dwarfed in front of anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Citation: Pazur, A., and M. External forcing of the geomagnetic +eld? Implications for the cosmic ray .ux—climate variability
Data on the relation of past climate variations and changes in the geomagnetic +eld can contribute to the research on a cosmic ray–climate link. This paper presents a synthesis of geological and astrophysical results about the link of magnetic +eld variations and Earth’s climate and external forcing. On millennial timescales, geomagnetic intensity lows are apparently in phase with times of low ...
متن کاملGeological support for the Umbrella Effect as a link between geomagnetic field and climate
The weakening of the geomagnetic field causes an increase in galactic cosmic ray (GCR) flux. Some researchers argue that enhanced GCR flux might lead to a climatic cooling by increasing low cloud formation, which enhances albedo (umbrella effect). Recent studies have reported geological evidence for a link between weakened geomagnetic field and climatic cooling. However, more work is needed on ...
متن کاملLink between Cosmic Rays and Clouds on Different Time Scales
A possible mechanism of solar variability influence upon the Earth’s climate is related to a link between the cosmic ray flux and cloudiness. Here we review evidences relating terrestrial climate variability to changes of cosmic ray flux in the Earth’s vicinity on different time scales. On daily scales, major Forbush decreases and solar energetic particle events can affect the cyclogenesis in s...

Earth's history has been witness to recurrently alternating phases of catastrophic evolution and dominant tectonic deformations, contractions and extension of rifting and spreading leading to quasi-cyclic changes in sedimentary environment and various earth processes. Recent studies have shown quasi-periodicities of 32 2 Million years (Myr) in various endogenic (geomagnetic reversals, magmatic ...
متن کاملQuantification of the Diminishing Earth’s Magnetic Dipole Intensity and Geomagnetic Activity as the Causal Source for Global Warming within the Oceans and Atmosphere
Quantitative analyses of actual measurements rather than modeling have shown that “global warming” has been heterogeneous over the surface of the planet and temporally non-linear. Residual regression analyses by Soares (2010) indicated increments of increased temperature precede increments of CO2 increase. The remarkably strong negative correlation (r = −0.99) between the earth’s magnetic dipol...
